3 Fingered Mitts


I saw the tridactyl pattern on knitty but i wanted thicker yarn, no cables, etc. so i knitted a mitten and split it. :)

materials:
-bulky yarn (about 100 yards?)
-us# 10 1/2 circular needles or dpn's
-2 stitch markers
-waste yarn
-yarn needle

CO=cast on
k2p2=knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches
m1 or m2=make 1 or 2 stitches
st=stitch
pm=place marker
k2tog=knit 2 stitches together
st st=stockinette stitch

CO 20st, join in the round.

Hand:
Rounds 1-15: k2p2 around
Round 16: knit st st around
Round 17: k5, m1, repeat until the end of the round. (24 st)
Rounds 18-25: knit st st around

Thumb gusset:
Round 26: k5, pm, m1, k1, m1, pm, k18 (26 st)
Round 27: knit
Round 28: knit to marker, slip marker, m1, k3, m1, slip marker, k18 (28 st)
Round 29: knit
Round 30: knit to marker, slip marker, m1, k5, m1, slip marker, k18 (30 st)
Round 31: knit to marker, put 7 st between markers on waste yarn, k18. (23 st on needles)
Round 32: k5, m1, k18. (24 st) Redistribute stitches so that the m1 is the beginning on the round (pm at beginning of round if needed)
Rounds 33-40: Knit st st around

First Finger:
Round 41: K6, slip 12 stitches onto waste yarn, CO 2, k6. (14st on needles)
Rounds 42-55: knit st st around (knit a couple more rows for longer fingers)
Round 56: k1, k2tog, repeat until last 2 stitches, k2. (10st)
Round 57: knit
Round 58: k2tog around (5st). Lace yarn tail through remaining stitches and pull tight, weave in tail.

Second finger:
Reattach yarn leaving long tail, and start knitting on the side closest to the first finger, CO 2, then k12. Repeat directions for first finger starting at round 42. Use long tail to close hole between fingers.

Thumb: Pick up 7 st from waste yarn, pick up 1 stitch from gap between thumb and hand, 8 st. When attaching yarn, leave a long tail to close gap between hand and thumb.


Rounds 1-12: knit
Round 13: k2tog around, 4st. Lace tail through stitches and pull tight, weave in.

Finishing: Close gap between 2 fingers using the tail left between fingers, close gap between thumb and hand using tail between thumb and hand.
